Facing Your Dental Fears by Dr. Daniel Stewart
Fearing the dentist and dental procedures affect a significant amount of adults in the US to differing degrees. About 5 to 10% of US adults are so fearful of receiving dental treatment that they will avoid dental care at all costs. But dental issues that are left untreated can lead to serious health problems, so overcoming this fear is a must for good oral, and overall, health.
There are several levels of fear about going to the dentist, and there is a difference between anxiety, fear and phobia. Dental anxiety is basically a fear of the unknown. Most people experience some degree of dental anxiety, especially if they’re about to have a procedure that they’ve never experienced before. Dental fear is a reaction to a known or experienced danger (“I know what the dentist is going to do, and I’m really scared!”). Dental phobia is a more intense form of dental fear. It can be so intense that it causes a person to feel sick and/or overwhelmed.
