The Benefit of Implant Supported Dentures

Posted on April 11, 2016. Filed under: Dental Implant, Dentures, Implant-Supported Dentures | Tags: , , , , |

Dental Implant DenturesThose with dentures know that they are difficult to wear, at best. Did you know that dental implants can be used underneath removable dentures to eliminate many of the issues associated with denture wear?

Implant-Supported Dentures

An implant-supported denture is simply a type of over-denture that is supported by, and attached to, dental implants. While a regular denture rests on the gums, an implant-supported denture is used when a person has enough bone in their jaw to support dental implants. Four dental implants under an upper denture can hold it securely so that the size of the plate can be reduced, removing the palate from the denture altogether. Just two implants are all that’s needed under a lower denture!

Non-removable implant supported dentures may be an option for those who don’t want to take their dentures out every day. This option requires more dental implants than a removable implant denture. With non-removable implant supported dentures the denture is actually screwed onto the dental implants. The final result is a much more natural feeling with one’s normal chewing forces completely restored… and you never have to take it out.

Patients at Smile Savers Dentistry say that the improved ability to chew their food is one of the biggest benefits of their implant-supported denture. Since the dentures anchor on the implants instead of merely resting on the gums, they allow patients to bite much harder with no discomfort. Another benefit of implant supported dentures – no messy adhesives!

Dr. Daniel Stewart at Smile Savers Dentistry in Columbia MarylandI recently returned from an international dental implant symposium that was hosted by the implant brand I use, Biohorizons. There were dentists at the symposium from all over the world. I was extremely impressed to see just how many doctors are embracing this technology and how predictable and well researched the dental implants we offer here at our dentist office Smile Savers Dentistry truly are.

Successful Dental Implants at Smile Savers Dentistry in Columbia, MD

Successful Dental Implants at Smile Savers Dentistry in Columbia, MD.

Biohorizons has a technology that no other brand has. It’s called Laserlok. They have solved the inherent problem of the gums attaching to the dental implant. All implants can attach to the bone but none – up to this point – were able to get the gums to attach. Through the amazing process of laser etching the side of the dental implant, at the size of 7 microns, the gum tissue will literally grow and attach to the laser channels.

I watched an electron microscope video of fibroblasts, the cells that make up the connective tissue of your gums, literally crawl along the channels and then settle in the grooves and become attached to the dental implant. Wow, to see those little cells acting on their own determinism was an amazing testament to life!

So what does this all mean to you, the dental patient? It means that these dental implants are more predictable and more natural than any other implants on the market. I am glad to be able to offer these to you at my Columbia, MD dental office, if you should need them to replace teeth or anchor a denture.

If you have any questions about dental implants, please feel free to give our dental office a call at 410-730-6460 to schedule an appointment. My experienced and caring team and I strive to be the best dentist office in Howard County and would love to help you with all of your dental and oral health care needs. The Smile Savers Dentistry office is conveniently located in Columbia, Maryland and is easily accessible from Route 100 or 29.

CJ Burwell at Smile Savers Dentistry
Tired of metal showing in your crowns? Skeptical about having metal in your mouth at all?

Here at Smile Savers Dentistry, we have found that metal in crowns can start to show through porcelain after time, changing the aesthetics and making the crown itself weaker. Also, you may have or may develop an allergy to the metal sitting on the actual prepped tooth.

Worry no more, because here at Smile Savers Dentistry we only use ceramics and all gold crowns. One of the ceramics we use is Zirconia; the strongest and most aesthetic ceramic crown available. It’s also used to make engine blocks, just in case you wanted an example of how strong it is! The other ceramic used is IPS e.max, which has great aesthetic properties and is known for its precision fit. We have had slim to no issues since switching to these two ceramics.

Of course good old gold is still used time to time for posterior crowns, which is still the strongest material used to make a crown and has long lasting durability properties. You can’t go wrong using one of these 3 materials for a future crown. We hope to see you here at Smile Savers Dentistry in Columbia, MD soon!

A Word From Dr. Stewart: Dental Implants

Posted on February 29, 2012. Filed under: Dental Health, Dental Implant, Oral Health, Smile Savers Dentistry | Tags: , , |

Lost a tooth and don’t know what to do? Don’t want to grind down perfectly healthy teeth for a bridge? Think dental implant.

Dental implants are a great choice for someone looking to replace lost teeth. If you have enough healthy bone and a good bite, you can replace lost teeth comfortably and predictably. Surprisingly dental implants aren’t very painful (I knew what you were thinking!) after the surgery.

I just placed another implant for a patient and here is what she wrote about her experience: “Dr. Stewart and the staff at Smile Savers ROCKS! I am feeling amazingly well for just having implant surgery. Every step was explained to me which helped ease my anxiety. Thanks!” It was very straight forward, painless, predictable and took less than 15 minutes! What a great service to replace a lost tooth.

If you need a tooth or teeth replaced, or if you are tired of loose fitting, unsightly dentures, give us a call and get a consult to see if this is the solution for you.
