LANAP® Laser Gum Surgery vs. Traditional Gum Surgery

80% of adults in the U.S. suffer from some degree of gum disease. If you’ve been told that you have gum disease and that surgery will be required, it’s important to know the difference between traditional gum surgery and laser gum surgery.

There are several types of traditional gum surgery.

Gingival flap surgery is the type often used to treat gum disease. The doctor utilizes a scalpel so the gum tissue can be folded back for visibility and to clean the pocket and reduce the pocket depth. The pocket depth is reduced by cutting away tissue. In many cases the additional use of bone grafting will be needed in order to help regenerate any bone or gum tissue lost to periodontitis. After the surgery, the surgeon will use stitches to put the gums back in place. Most people suffer mild to moderate pain after traditional gum surgery. It usually can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. There is also some risk of bleeding and swelling after gum surgery.

LANAP periodontal surgery is a full-mouth procedure usually completed in two, 2-hour visits.

pain free gum surgery in howard countyThe LANAP® protocol is the only laser gum disease treatment that is FDA cleared for true regeneration. It can re-grow the tissues and bone lost to gum disease. The LANAP=LAR (Laser Assisted Regeneration) procedure is one of the most successful protocols in treating periodontal disease because it can target the source of the inflammation without hurting or removing any healthy gum tissue, slow or stop attachment loss and decrease pocket depth. It allows the body to recover from the chronic infection without the need for a scalpel or for sutures. Compared to traditional surgery, patients have stated that the LANAP protocol is less painful and there is very little downtime after treatment.

As technology evolves and breakthroughs are made in dentistry, Howard County’s Smile Savers Dentistry is committed to offering the latest and most advanced treatments to our patients in order to provide the highest standard of care available. Utilizing a laser to treat periodontal disease is something that many patients can take advantage of, although not every patient is a candidate. If you’ve been told that you have gum disease and require surgery, please contact Smile Savers Dentistry in Columbia, Maryland at 410-730-6460 for a free consultation with Dr. Stewart to see if you are a candidate for LANAP®.  *Free consultation offer expires July 31, 2016.

Why is the LANAP® Procedure Better for the Treatment of Gum Disease?

LANAP Treatment Columbia MD

Why is the LANAP® Procedure Better for the Treatment of Gum Disease?

So let’s define gum disease. It’s an infection; that happens over time, of the tissues that surround and support your teeth and is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. Because gum disease is usually painless, you may not even know that you have it. Gum disease is caused by plaque, the sticky film of bacteria that is constantly forming on our teeth. If you’ve been diagnosed with gum disease, you do not have to resort to painful surgery.

With the LANAP® Procedure there’s no surgery – no cutting or suturing.

Laser-assisted new attachment procedure (LANAP) available in Howard County, MD is a surgical therapy for the treatment of gum disease, intended to work through regeneration rather than resection. There’s much less discomfort with the LANAP® Protocol than with standard surgery for gum disease – both during and after the procedure. LANAP® also takes less time than traditional, invasive surgery. All it generally takes is two 2-hour visits with the dentist and two follow up visits. Traditional gum disease surgery requires four sessions, with follow-up visits for suture removal and additional check-ups.

LANAP® gives better, longer-lasting results.

Your dentist will probably recommend a soft diet for a day or two after the procedure; and common sense should prevail, but in most cases, patients feel good enough to eat anything they want right afterwards. And 98% of LANAP® treated patients remain stable after five years!

Following the invasive, traditional gum disease surgery, recovery can take between to 2-4 weeks during which time patients can experience considerable pain and swelling, where they may be restricted to liquid or soft diets.

There’s less than 24 hour recovery period with LANAP®, so you won’t lose time from work.

The LANAP® Procedure is safe for patients with health concerns such as diabetes, HIV, hemophilia, or those taking medications such as Plavix or aspirin. Watch this LANAP® video presented by Smile Savers Dentistry for more information.

If you have been told that you have gum disease and would like to see if you are a candidate for LANAP®, please contact Smile Savers Dentistry in Columbia, Maryland at 410-343-9900 for a free consultation with Dr. Daniel C. Stewart before December 31, 2015.

Laser Periodontal Therapy for Bone Regeneration

Posted on May 6, 2015. Filed under: Dr. Daniel Stewart, gum disease, Gum Surgery, LANAP, Periodontal Disease, Smile Savers Dentistry | Tags: , , , , |

My patients know that I am committed to delivering the most precise, comfortable, and time-efficient treatments to each and every person who comes in to Smile Savers Dentistry. To achieve this, I implement only cutting-edge technology and tools that have been proven to produce brilliant results.

One such technology is the PerioLase® Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure, or LANAP. This technology vastly exceeds traditional periodontal therapy because it’s implemented by sophisticated laser design to help patients regenerate significant bone loss due to periodontal disease. PerioLase® is the only dental laser to have a 100% success rate in tissue reconstruction!

This treatment sterilizes the gum pocket around the tooth and removes bacteria from the inside of the pocket. By creating a clean, sealed, and stable environment, the PerioLase® procedure promotes a regenerative healing process that culminates in creating an environment that best supports the regeneration of bone in your mouth. Restoring the bone mass and structure in your mouth is vital in strengthening your gums, teeth, and overall oral health.

Bone Regrowth with LANAPThe image on the left is a before and after photo set of a patient’s case. In the photo of the patient’s radiograph on the left, you’ll notice the large open space in-between the center tooth’s roots. When such a space exists it indicates a loss of bone. It’s most often brought about by periodontal disease. As you can see in the photo on the right (taken just 2 months after treatment), the tooth was saved due to proper
bone rengeneration.

Periodontal Disease Patients in Howard County Looking for a Gum Surgery Alternative in Columbia, MD Can Now Receive Treatment from Dr. Daniel C. Stewart

Dr. Daniel Stewart, DDS

Daniel C. Stewart, DDS

Dr. Daniel C. Stewart belongs to a select group of dental professionals who are certified to perform laser gum surgery, a minimally invasive alternative to traditional gum surgery. Only one percent of dental professionals in the country currently offer the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP®), which uses sophisticated laser technology to eliminate periodontal infection. Dr. Stewart recently began offering patients with periodontal disease this gum surgery alternative in his Columbia, MD dental practice, Smile Savers Dentistry. The LANAP® treatment is the first FDA-cleared laser procedure for gum disease and periodontal treatment and is only available from a few dentists in Howard County.

Dr. Stewart states, “This is one of the most amazing procedures I have used in over 26 years of practice. My patients are so happy and thankful when the treatment is complete.”

Prior to LANAP®, traditional surgery was typically the only option available to patients whose gum disease had progressed into the moderate or advanced stages. Because of the pain and recovery time associated with traditional gum surgery, many people postpone seeking the care they need. If left untreated, gum disease eventually results in tooth and bone loss. Significant bone loss can even render a patient ineligible for tooth replacement solutions like dental implants. However, the LANAP® treatment is less invasive than traditional surgery, so patients typically experience less pain and a much shorter recovery period. At the same time, the LANAP® treatment offers all of the same health benefits as other gum disease.

Posted on June 9, 2014. Filed under: Dental Care, Dental Health, Dental Treatment, gum disease, Gum Surgery, LANAP, Oral Health, Smile Savers Dentistry | Tags: , , , , |

If you are looking for help in correcting your gum disease, come in to our Columbia dentist office for a LANAP consultation.
gum disease treatment baltimore
At Smile Savers Dentistry, we have a dental laser that treats periodontal disease without all of the cutting, sutures, and discomfort of traditional, aggressive gum surgery. We have seen miraculous results over the past four years with LANAP. We had a patient say that in one month post-op that he couldn’t remember the last time when he didn’t see bleeding when he brushed! Another patient told us her previous dentist would have had all her teeth extracted and dentures placed. But after LANAP, she still has all of her teeth and they are healthy again.

Quite simply, the FDA approved laser is able to form a clean, closed, and stable environment which allows the body to heal itself naturally and regenerate lost bone. This laser-based approach to treating gum disease makes it easier for you to return your gums to health and the process is far more comfortable than gum surgery.

LANAP is safe for patients with health concerns such as diabetes, HIV, hemophilia, or those taking medications such as Courmadin or Cyclosyporin. The laser treatment is generally no more expensive than traditional gum surgery. However, gum disease treatment plans will always vary with the stage of your periodontal disease, bone loss, and chartings.

If you would like to learn more about LANAP and see if you are a candidate for this safe and gentle treatment for gum disease, please call the Smile Savers Dentistry office to schedule a consultation with Dr. Daniel Stewart: 410-730-6460.

A Word From Dr. Stewart: Could Oral Bacteria Be Linked to an Increased Risk of Pancreatic Cancer?

Posted on October 3, 2012. Filed under: Dental Health, Dental Hygiene Tips, Dental Hygienist, Dental Treatment, gum disease, Gum Surgery, LANAP, Oral Health, Oral Health and Nutrition, pancreatic cancer, Periodontal Disease, Smile Savers Dentistry | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Dr. Daniel Stewart at Smile Savers Dentistry in Columbia MarylandThe British Dental Health Foundation published a report yesterday that gum disease and pancreatic cancer may be associated with one another. The study found that certain types of bacterium in gum disease are linked to a 2 times higher risk of developing pancreatic cancer. However, this is not to be confused with oral bacteria that is not harmful. If you have been told that you have periodontal disease, please don’t wait for it to further affect your health and well-being. Smile Savers Dentistry offers an excellent, proven alternative to gum surgery… more on that in a minute.

Researchers are saying that while they can’t yet prove that gum disease increases the risk of pancreatic cancer, the new research shows there is definitely evidence that there is a significant relationship between the two. It is not certain if certain bacteria found in gum disease is a cause or a result of pancreatic cancer. Breaking this down to the simplest point … this is yet another indication that good oral hygiene is crucial to one’s overall health. Did you know that only 4% of pancreatic cancer patients live for more than 5 years?

If you have been diagnosed with gum disease or feel you should be evaluated, call our Columbia dental office immediately for an appointment at 410-730-6460. Smile Savers Dentistry offers LANAP which is an FDA approved laser alternative to gum surgery. This laser-based approach to treating gum disease makes it easier for you to return your gums to health and the process is far more comfortable than gum surgery. You can visit our LANAP website for more information on this non-surgical treatment for periodontal disease.

A Word From Dr. Stewart: LANAP, A Better Alternative

Posted on May 9, 2012. Filed under: General Dentistry, Gum Surgery, LANAP, Periodontal Disease, Smile Savers Dentistry | Tags: , , , , |

Dr. Daniel Stewart at Smile Savers Dentistry in Columbia MarylandI’ve recently seen a few new patients looking for help in correcting their gum disease. They have been told that they need scaling and root planing (scraping of the teeth using anesthetic), cutting the gums back so as to get better access to the roots and then bone grafting to fill in where the bone has been eroded away.

Youch! No wonder they want a second opinion!

Did you know that I have a dental laser that can do the same thing without all of that painful, aggressive surgery? I have seen miraculous results over the past two years with LANAP. I had a patient say that in one month post-op that he couldn’t remember the last time when he didn’t see bleeding when he brushed! I had another patient who if they would have seen another dentist, she would have had all her teeth extracted and dentures placed. Guess what!? After LANAP, she still has all of them and they are healthy again.

Most of you who have been patients with me for a while probably don’t have to worry about this procedure because you don’t need it, but you may have friends, family or co-workers that do. Please refer them over here to get a consult to find out if they need help. Don’t let them have the other alternative used on them… unless you don’t like them.
