The Relationship Between Sugar And Your Oral Health

pumpkin-cookieFall is in the air and it seems you can’t go anywhere without pumpkin-flavored something or other staring you in the face. And around the corner is Halloween, the unofficial kickoff for celebrating all things sweet and sugary. 

Most people think that sugars in their food and drink are what play a major role in the development of tooth decay. But it’s not the sugar itself that does the damage. Certain bacteria feed on the sugars, use it as energy and then release acid, which gradually dissolves tooth enamel. The acid produced by plaque can eventually create a small hole in the enamel. Left untreated, dental cavities can eventually progress into the deeper layers of the tooth to the nerve, causing pain and possible tooth loss.

Dental caries (tooth decay) are the most common cause of tooth loss in young people. While everyone is at risk of tooth decay, children and teens are most at risk. 

One needs to stay on their toes to avoid the negative effects of sugar on teeth. The first step is to pay attention to the amount of time your teeth are exposed to sugar. Eating a cookie is much better for your teeth than drinking a soda or fruit juice, as it is a shorter exposure to the sugar.

• Brush and floss twice a day.
• Avoid snacking on sticky-sugary items (ex: gummy bears, fruit chews)
• Reduce your consumption of sugary drinks.
• Limit sugary foods to mealtimes.
• Rinse with water after eating sugary foods.
• Maintain regular dental check-ups and cleanings.

Gatorade Erodes Teeth Faster than Coca-Cola, Red Bull and Fruit Juice

Healthy drinks for your teethGatorade may be the go-to sports drink for many athletes — both recreational and professional — but while the sugar in the drink helps fuel your body, it’s pretty horrible for your teeth.

University of Iowa researchers found that Gatorade was significantly more corrosive than both Red Bull and Coke on tooth enamel. Red Bull and Coke were found to be significantly more corrosive than Diet Coke and apple juice. On the roots of the teeth, Gatorade was much more corrosive than Red Bull. Coke, apple juice and Diet Coke followed in that order.

However, what matters most isn’t which beverage you drink. It’s how and when you drink it. Sugared drinks can cause cavities but the frequency of exposure is key. If you drink a beverage during meals, the saliva stimulated by your chewing will buffer the acid. But if you are constantly drinking a Gatorade or Coke, your teeth are exposed to acid throughout the day.

Just because Gatorade is bad for your teeth doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t ever drink it. As with most things, moderation is key. Just don’t make Gatorade your primary choice of staying hydrated. Water is a much healthier choice – for both your body and your teeth.

Halloween Tips from the FDA and ADA

Halloween Dental and Safety TipsTrick-or-Treating is coming up fast, so we thought we would share some of the FDA’s Halloween Food Safety Tips. Most of these handy tips are a “no-brainer” but it’s always a good idea for a quick checklist to go over with your kids before they head out for their free goodies.

  • Kids shouldn’t snack while they’re out trick-or-treating. Insist that they wait until they get home for you to have a chance to inspect the contents of their bag. To help prevent them from snacking, give them a light meal or snack before they head out. Don’t send them out on an empty stomach.
  • Tell children not to accept; and especially not to eat, anything that isn’t commercially wrapped.
  • Inspect commercially wrapped treats for signs of tampering, such as an unusual appearance or discoloration, tiny pinholes, or tears in wrappers. Throw away anything that looks suspicious.
  • Parents of very young children should remove any choking hazards such as gum, peanuts, hard candies or small toys.

And here are a few Halloween dental tips from the ADA as well.

  • Avoid sticky candies that cling to your teeth. The stickier candies, like taffy and gummy bears, take longer to get washed away by saliva, increasing the risk for tooth decay.
  • Avoid hard candy and other sweets that stay in your mouth for a long time. Unless it’s a sugar-free product, candies that stay in the mouth for a long period of time subject teeth to an increased risk for tooth decay.
  • Eat Halloween candy with, or shortly after, meals. Saliva production increases during meals and helps cancel out acids produced by bacteria in your mouth and helps rinse away food particles.

Healthy Teeth Tips For Your Thanksgiving Dinner from Smile Savers Dentistry

Healthy Teeth Advice from Smile Savers DentistryThe Thanksgiving holiday is a time to enjoy the company of your family and friends, and of course to enjoy (sometimes too much) delicious food. It’s really not the time to think of your diet or your oral health, for that matter. Don’t worry, we’re not going to be the voice of doom and gloom for the holidays.

Bacteria just loves sugar and starch! They feed on the sugar that enters your mouth and it causes the enamel of your teeth to break down, which results in sensitivity and pain! So, as you indulge this Thursday, try to follow some of these tips so that we don’t see you in the office until you are due for your next cleaning!

Avoid Grazing: It’s easy to graze during a holiday feast like Thanksgiving. The problem with grazing is two-fold. Because you are aimlessly reaching for appetizers and cookies, you have no real measure of the amount of food you are eating, which does not help your waistline. The sugars from the food can also sit in the plaque on your teeth. Try to rinse your mouth with warm water after snacking.

Say No Thanks to Sugary Drinks: Opt for water or unsweetened tea. Not only will your teeth thank you for being so protective, your waistline will thank you too. Another idea is to make a low-sugar, sparkling cranberry punch to serve with dinner.

Limit Teeth Staining Foods and Drinks: If you plan to be drinking red wine, pair it with some cheese cubes. Cheese provides a protective barrier between your tooth enamel and the red wine. Antioxidant-rich, brightly colored fruits and veggies, and coffee and tea can also cause staining.

Add Some Veggies and Crunch To Your Plate: Make a veggie platter to satisfy you and your guests as appetizers, over the more fattening options of chips and crackers. Prepare an inviting salad to enjoy before, or with, dinner. The crunchy veggies help in removing the plaque from your teeth and won’t add inches to your waistline. Substitute potatoes with sweet potatoes instead and serve fiber-rich broccoli for Thanksgiving dinner. These foods will aid in saliva secretion that helps in flushing out the accumulated acid from the other food.

After Dinner Drinks Do’s and Don’ts: Sorry coffee lovers, it’s better to choose tea over coffee after dinner. The polyphenols within the tea can help the veggies to get rid of the harmful acid producing bacteria in your mouth.

Carry a Toothbrush: If you’re not enjoying Thanksgiving at home, toss a toothbrush in your purse or coat jacket. Duck in to the bathroom and rinse your mouth with warm water and brush your way to a nice, fresh mouth for the end of the evening.

Dr. Daniel Stewart at Smile Savers Dentistry in Columbia MarylandA frequent question we get at Smile Savers Dentistry is “What Causes Bad Breath?” And believe it or not, the question about bad breath is usually not from the offender, but actually from a long-time suffering family member or spouse. Unfortunately, there are many causes of bad breath, which is called “halitosis” – some serious and some not. Many people decide to just live with it, but the good news is that diagnosing and treating bad breath is easy.

So to answer the question as best as I can, here is a brief list of causes; in no particular order.

Food Containing Pungent Oils Garlic and onions may be extremely healthy, but they also contain oils which may cause an unhealthy reaction to those around you. These odors come from the lungs, last up to 72 hours and can be tough to cover up. Mints, gum and rinses are your best bet for your breath.

Dry Mouth A dry mouth allows dead cells to accumulate on your gums, tongue and cheeks. And while morning breath is a perfectly normal phenomenon due to lower salivary activity at night, it shouldn’t last all day. Those who snore, mouth-breathe, take certain medicines, or even those in their middle ages are prone to dry mouth.

Smoking Smoking dries out your mouth and also, tobacco just plain stinks. If lung cancer and heart disease aren’t reason enough to give up the cigarettes, maybe a constant foul mouth will help you make that life-saving decision?

Routine Illness Colds, sore throats, coughs and sinus infections all cause mucus to get trapped in our mouths, throats or noses, which causes foul breath until the illness is gone.

Chronic Disease or Condition Many serious diseases such as lung infections, kidney failures, diabetes, cancer, anorexia, bulemia and other diseases can cause very specific types of halitosis. The good news is that these are on the rare side, but if anything along these lines is suspected, seek the appropriate doctor.

Poor Dental Hygiene and Gum Disease Ahhhh… this our favorite at Smile Savers Dentistry. Not because we like people to have poor dental hygiene and gum disease, but because these are very common causes of bad breath and we can usually treat them quite easily here in our Columbia MD dentist office. It’s important that you don’t wait too long. Gum disease, which usually starts with poor brushing and flossing habits as well as a lack of routine dental visits, can do much more than just make your mouth smell.

In just a short period of time, gum disease can advance and eat away at the gums and bone which hold your teeth in place. The result? Loose, unstable teeth which will eventually be lost if not treated. Catching gum disease early is great as treatment is typically conservative. But wait too long and it gets much more difficult and extensive.

So to wrap up, bad breath is not normal! Seeing your dentist and dental hygienist on a regular basis is your best bet for making sure your teeth and gums stay healthy, your smile stays bright, and your breath doesn’t cause others to run for cover in the opposite direction.

Being a dentist, I take it for granted the insidiousness of carbohydrates and added sugar in our diets.

Did you know that if you are a diabetic you have a fifty percent greater chance of getting dentures? Did you know that children born after 2010 are more likely to have a lesser life span than their parents due to the effects of too many carbohydrates? Many of my patients are on the classic meds for high blood pressure, diabetes and blood thinners and guess what – these diseases all stem back to food!

Children are now getting diabetes before their teens. It is an epidemic and yes, I see this in my dental population. Decay is on a massive increase. Most 5 year olds now have at least one cavity. When I first opened the dental practice, I rarely saw this. The benefits of fluoride can no longer compete.

It’s that time of the year again … and as I see my Smile Savers Dentistry patients on this last day of 2012, I thought it would be a good idea to offer you all some dental resolutions. Hopefully you can add some or all of these to your own list. Most can be easily worked in to your routine with little to no effort. Keeping these tips/resolutions can ensure a fantastic and healthy smile for throughout the New Year.

    1. Increase your toothbrushing time to 2 minutes, 2 times a day. The average person does not spend the correct amount of time brushing their teeth and it really does take at least 2 minutes to adequately clean your teeth and mouth.
    2. Don’t forget about your tongue! A few quick swipes with your brush across your tongue is all you really need to do.
    3. Flossing is not just meant to be done right before your dental appointment! A large percentage of cavaties can start in areas that are missed by tooth brushing alone.
    4. Use mouthwash regularly to enjoy a clean, fresh mouth and to kill bacteria.
    5. You hear this all the time … drink more water! Not only is it good for your health, it can help reduce tooth staining from coffee or wine if you take a few sips afterwards.
    6. Eat healthy – hopefully this is already one of your resolutions! Don’t overindulge in candies and sweets. Not only will this reduce the chance of cavities, it will also help you maintain or possibly even lose weight.
    7. Quit smoking – or chewing. Not only will this stain your teeth, it can lead to gum disease and tooth decay.
    8. Make sure you visit our dental office in Columbia regularly. Prevention is key! Regular visits will benefit both your teeth and your health in so many ways.
    9. If something feels wrong, large or small … fix it! Don’t ignore it or wait and hope that it gets better. Usually, it gets much worse. Procrastination is not good for your teeth or your health, and it is also not very good for your bank account.
