Smile Savers Dentistry Now Offers the VELscope® Vx Enhanced Oral Assessment System for Oral Cancer Screenings

Posted on December 3, 2016. Filed under: Oral Cancer Screening, Oral Health, Smile Savers Dentistry | Tags: , , , |

doc-velscopeSmile Savers Dentistry is pleased to now offer cancer screening in our Columbia, MD office with the VELscope® Vx as part of your routine dental hygiene cleaning and exam. VELscope® Vx is a sophisticated technology that helps us find diseased tissue deep below the surface, long before it’s visible to the naked eye. The VELscope® Vx is one of the newest methods of detecting cancerous and precancerous growth. And if we are able to catch it early, there’s an 80 percent chance of curing the disease.

It’s a staggering number, over 48,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer by the end of this year. Worldwide the problem is even greater, with over 450,000 new cases being discovered each year. Unfortunately oral cancer, in its early stages, may not even be noticed by the patient. The physical symptoms are not always obvious and its often painless. This makes this disease all the more dangerous because it is usually not detected until it’s quite advanced. When oral cancer is discovered late in its development, the survival rate is usually quite low, according to the Oral Cancer Foundation.

Early Detection is Key.

When discovered early, the 5-year survival rate for oral cancer patients is about 83%. While the VELscope® Vx does not diagnose cancer, it alerts us to areas of concern earlier than ever before. During the exam, the award-winning VELscope® Vx uses a harmless blue light that is absorbed by the molecules in your mouth. The exam is quick (about two minutes), safe and painless. If we do happen to find a suspicious area during the exam, we’ll talk to you about the next steps. And if a VELscope® Vx exam that shows normal, healthy tissue can instantly give you peace of mind.

At Smile Savers Dentistry, our doctors and staff care about your oral health and are dedicated to providing high-quality, personalized patient care using the latest technology to the Howard County community. VELscope® Vx is one more way that we continue to give you the best care possible. Call the office at 410-730-6460 to schedule an appointment today.

The Relationship Between Sugar And Your Oral Health

Posted on October 13, 2016. Filed under: Dental Care, Dental Cavity, Dental Hygiene Tips, Oral Health, Oral Health and Nutrition | Tags: , , , , |

pumpkin-cookieFall is in the air and it seems you can’t go anywhere without pumpkin-flavored something or other staring you in the face. And around the corner is Halloween, the unofficial kickoff for celebrating all things sweet and sugary.

Most people think that sugars in their food and drink are what play a major role in the development of tooth decay. But it’s not the sugar itself that does the damage. Certain bacteria feed on the sugars, use it as energy and then release acid, which gradually dissolves tooth enamel. The acid produced by plaque can eventually create a small hole in the enamel. Left untreated, dental cavities can eventually progress into the deeper layers of the tooth to the nerve, causing pain and possible tooth loss.

Dental caries (tooth decay) are the most common cause of tooth loss in young people. While everyone is at risk of tooth decay, children and teens are most at risk.

One needs to stay on their toes to avoid the negative effects of sugar on teeth. The first step is to pay attention to the amount of time your teeth are exposed to sugar. Eating a cookie is much better for your teeth than drinking a soda or fruit juice, as it is a shorter exposure to the sugar.

• Brush and floss twice a day.
• Avoid snacking on sticky-sugary items (ex: gummy bears, fruit chews)
• Reduce your consumption of sugary drinks.
• Limit sugary foods to mealtimes.
• Rinse with water after eating sugary foods.
• Maintain regular dental check-ups and cleanings.

Add regular dental visits to the mix, and you and your loved ones have the best shot at winning the battle against tooth decay.

Call the Smile Savers Dentistry office in Columbia, MD today to schedule your dental hygiene appointment at 410-730-6460. We want you to keep your teeth healthy for your lifetime. We’re currently accepting new and emergency dental patients in the Howard County area.

We believe that a relaxed approach to each patient’s dental needs is what works best. The real point is that we value each one of our patients. Each patient is a part of our lives and we’re part of theirs. We’re here to provide you with the highest level of dental care possible, using the latest technology. Speaking on behalf of every member of our team, there is no greater reward or honor for each of us than to see our patients happy, healthy and smiling with confidence.

Back to School and Your Family’s Dental Health

Posted on August 9, 2016. Filed under: Childrens Dental Health, Dental Care, Family Dental Health, Uncategorized | Tags: , , , , |

Back to School dental hygieneIt’s the most wonderful time of the year… the kids are going back to school this month!

Did you know that children with poor oral health were almost 3 times more likely to miss school as a result of dental pain than those with healthy teeth and gums? According to National Institutes of Health estimates, nearly 30% of children and adolescents in the U.S. have chronic health conditions. Among the most prevalent diseases of childhood are dental caries (cavities), asthma, diabetes, and obesity. Dental caries is actually the most common issue!

So what can you do to improve your family’s dental health?

Encourage good dental hygiene habits at home. Make sure everyone is brushing and flossing twice a day, every day. It’s also important to check up on your kids on occasion. Don’t just accept “yes, I did it!”

Offer a healthy diet, and not just at mealtime. Sugary and high-starch snacks should be limited. Bacteria that causes tooth decay thrives on simple sugars. Between meals, and especially at bedtime, drink water.

examSchedule regular checkups. Schedule two (2) checkup/cleanings a year to help spot current or potential future problems before they get worse. In a recent study, 66% of the parents who reported no school absences said they had proactive dental visits within the past year! With the start of school right around the corner, schedule an appointment for you and your family now to avoid missed classes and sports activities.

Dr. Stewart and the friendly staff at Smile Savers Dentistry in Columbia, Maryland understand how busy life can be at times, especially when school starts back up. They will work with your schedule to make sure that you and your kids can come in for your regular hygiene appointments. LANAP® Laser Gum Surgery in Columbia, MD

LANAP® Laser Gum Surgery vs. Traditional Gum Surgery

80% of adults in the U.S. suffer from some degree of gum disease. If you’ve been told that you have gum disease and that surgery will be required, it’s important to know the difference between traditional gum surgery and laser gum surgery.

gum surgery in columbia md

Show Off Your Healthy Teeth and Gums

There are several types of traditional gum surgery.

Gingival flap surgery is the type often used to treat gum disease. The doctor utilizes a scalpel so the gum tissue can be folded back for visibility and to clean the pocket and reduce the pocket depth. The pocket depth is reduced by cutting away tissue. In many cases the additional use of bone grafting will be needed in order to help regenerate any bone or gum tissue lost to periodontitis. After the surgery, the surgeon will use stitches to put the gums back in place. Most people suffer mild to moderate pain after traditional gum surgery. It usually can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. There is also some risk of bleeding and swelling after gum surgery.

LANAP periodontal surgery is a full-mouth procedure usually completed in two, 2-hour visits.

pain free gum surgery in howard countyThe LANAP® protocol is the only laser gum disease treatment that is FDA cleared for true regeneration. It can re-grow the tissues and bone lost to gum disease. The LANAP=LAR (Laser Assisted Regeneration) procedure is one of the most successful protocols in treating periodontal disease because it can target the source of the inflammation without hurting or removing any healthy gum tissue, slow or stop attachment loss and decrease pocket depth. It allows the body to recover from the chronic infection without the need for a scalpel or for sutures. Compared to traditional surgery, patients have stated that the LANAP protocol is less painful and there is very little downtime after treatment.

As technology evolves and breakthroughs are made in dentistry, Howard County’s Smile Savers Dentistry is committed to offering the latest and most advanced treatments to our patients in order to provide the highest standard of care available. Utilizing a laser to treat periodontal disease is something that many patients can take advantage of, although not every patient is a candidate. If you’ve been told that you have gum disease and require surgery, please contact Smile Savers Dentistry in Columbia, Maryland at 410-730-6460 for a free consultation with Dr. Stewart to see if you are a candidate for LANAP®.  *Free consultation offer expires July 31, 2016.

Gatorade Erodes Teeth Faster than Coca-Cola, Red Bull and Fruit Juice

Posted on May 9, 2016. Filed under: Dental Health, healthy teeth, Oral Health and Nutrition | Tags: , , , , |

Healthy drinks for your teethGatorade may be the go-to sports drink for many athletes — both recreational and professional — but while the sugar in the drink helps fuel your body, it’s pretty horrible for your teeth.

University of Iowa researchers found that Gatorade was significantly more corrosive than both Red Bull and Coke on tooth enamel. Red Bull and Coke were found to be significantly more corrosive than Diet Coke and apple juice. On the roots of the teeth, Gatorade was much more corrosive than Red Bull. Coke, apple juice and Diet Coke followed in that order.

However, what matters most isn’t which beverage you drink. It’s how and when you drink it. Sugared drinks can cause cavities but the frequency of exposure is key. If you drink a beverage during meals, the saliva stimulated by your chewing will buffer the acid. But if you are constantly drinking a Gatorade or Coke, your teeth are exposed to acid throughout the day.

Just because Gatorade is bad for your teeth doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t ever drink it. As with most things, moderation is key. Just don’t make Gatorade your primary choice of staying hydrated. Water is a much healthier choice – for both your body and your teeth.

At Smile Savers Dentistry in Columbia, MD, we care about your oral and overall health. If you are overdue for your next dental exam and cleaning, please call the dental office today at 410-730-6460 and get on our hygiene schedule. You can also request a dental appointment online. Smile Savers Dentistry is currently accepting both new and emergency patients. Dr. Daniel Stewart and his friendly, caring staff strive to be the best dentist office in Columbia, MD.

The Benefit of Implant Supported Dentures

Posted on April 11, 2016. Filed under: Dental Implant, Dentures, Implant-Supported Dentures | Tags: , , , , |

Dental Implant DenturesThose with dentures know that they are difficult to wear, at best. Did you know that dental implants can be used underneath removable dentures to eliminate many of the issues associated with denture wear?

Implant-Supported Dentures

An implant-supported denture is simply a type of over-denture that is supported by, and attached to, dental implants. While a regular denture rests on the gums, an implant-supported denture is used when a person has enough bone in their jaw to support dental implants. Four dental implants under an upper denture can hold it securely so that the size of the plate can be reduced, removing the palate from the denture altogether. Just two implants are all that’s needed under a lower denture!

Non-removable implant supported dentures may be an option for those who don’t want to take their dentures out every day. This option requires more dental implants than a removable implant denture. With non-removable implant supported dentures the denture is actually screwed onto the dental implants. The final result is a much more natural feeling with one’s normal chewing forces completely restored… and you never have to take it out.

Patients at Smile Savers Dentistry say that the improved ability to chew their food is one of the biggest benefits of their implant-supported denture. Since the dentures anchor on the implants instead of merely resting on the gums, they allow patients to bite much harder with no discomfort. Another benefit of implant supported dentures – no messy adhesives!

If you would like to see if you are a candidate for implant-supported dentures, please call our office at 410-730-6460 and schedule a free consultation with Dr. Daniel Stewart during the month of April. Smile Savers Dentistry is looks forward to helping you keep your healthy teeth and gums for a lifetime. You can also request a dental appointment online.

Smile Savers Dentistry is currently accepting new and emergency patients from Columbia and surrounding communities. Dr. Daniel Stewart and his friendly staff strive to be the best dentist office in Howard County.
